abbr vs. acronym
Thanks to Daniel for clearing this up for me:

- depends on the context
simple rule is that acronym is if you pronounce the shortened word
PINE is acronym (pine is not elm)
CIA is abbr

Sorry, I should have warned you. It was a simple, concise, and better than any other explanation that I could find. And I figure that I can’t be the only one out there that didn’t know the difference.
